Gorgeous Black-and-White Bedrooms

By Jane Blanchard

Is there anything more effortlessly chic than black and white decor? It looks good in all seasons and never clashes with anything. It’s a bold statement that tells people you know exactly what you’re about. It’s no wonder that people use this classic color combo in kitchens and baths, where clean lines are prized.

But…in the bedroom? Black and white has a softer side, and you might be surprised by just how well it works in a bedroom. Check out some amazing black and white looks below.

If you’re concerned that black walls in a bedroom might be a tad oppressive, lighten up the scene with a gorgeous web of fairy lights across the ceiling and walls. These points of light make it feel like the bed is nestled among the stars. Note also that the room is actually painted with three separate shades of off-black for warmth and visual interest (Sherwin Williams Andiron, Black Bean, and Caviar).

This room shows how utterly luxe black and white can be in the bedroom. Overstuffed pillows and headboard keep the look soft while retro lighting fixtures add interest and textures from several eras. It might be hard to mix antiques and modern designs under normal circumstances, but this color scheme brings it all together effortlessly.

To keep a black and white color scheme from being too boring, add metallic pieces to reflect light. In this room accents like the mirror, lamps, and picture frame add glints of silver and gold for visual interest. There’s additional sparkly texture in the wallpaper pattern and studded nightstand, which keep the eye moving about this deceptively dynamic space.

In a black and white color scheme, you can always tip the balance of color towards white for an airy bedroom. This classic wallpaper pattern lights up an accent wall while the rest of the room is cleanly painted. In another nod to classic bedroom design, the linens are mostly white, with just a couple black accent pillows. The hardwood floors add warmth to anchor the space.

Black and white also work very well in a child’s bedroom. You can indulge kids’ love of bold patterns without limit: they all blend together cleanly when there are no additional colors to clash. We love the addition of chalkboard paint so kids can add their own stamp of creativity to their rooms–with white chalk, of course!

If a totally black and white color scheme just feels too restrictive, it’s ok to add a pop of color. We love the look of the classic chair painted in a thoroughly modern shade of green. That green also shows up in a single throw pillow and the plant.
